Welcome to Overhead Cranes Source

Companies supplying overhead cranes to buy, sell or hire can be found here at www.overheadcranessource.co.uk.

Overhead cranes come into their own where lifting gear is required over a large working area that must remain free of obstructions such as the automotive and aviation construction industries, and in other environments where mounting a crane or hoist to the floor is impractical or inconvenient. Overhead cranes tend to be better for these environments than jib cranes.

The basic principle of an overhead crane, which is alternatively known as a suspended crane, is that the actual lifting gear runs along one or two beams attached to a wall or other solid fixture rather than to free-standing uprights, the latter type being gantry cranes.

There are several different methods of constructing a crane overhead. They can be slung under rails, single or double girder supported. Such cranes can also be cab or radio controlled.

Similar in many respects to overhead cranes are bridge cranes. Overhead bridge cranes can be free standing, ceiling mounted, under-slung or top-running. There is also the option of having full-length maintenance platforms. Electric overhead cranes can be very efficient and quiet.

Makers of overhead cranes include United Crane Services, Morris, and Granada Materials Handling.

Overhead cranes, stand alone cranes, Crane accessories

An overhead crane is a type of crane where the hook-and-line mechanism runs along a horizontal beam that runs along two widely separated rails. Overhead cranes are often used in long factory buildings where they run along rails along the building’s two long walls. Overhead cranes are quite similar to a gantry cranes. An overhead crane typically consists of three important parts: The hoist, which provides up and down motion to lift items, the trolley, which enables sideways movements and the bridge which gives the back and forward motion for trolley, hoist, and load.

Overhead cranes are permanently installed in a factory, shop, or warehouse to move items and so are therefore not moveable by humans or forklifts.

The most common use of overhead cranes is in the steel industry. Every step of steel, until it leaves a factory as a finished product, is handled by an overhead crane. Raw materials are poured into a furnace by the crane, hot steel is stored for cooling by an overhead crane, and the finished coils are lifted and loaded onto trucks and trains by electric overhead cranes, and the fabricator or stamper uses an overhead crane to handle the steel in their factory. The auto mobile industry uses overhead cranes for handling raw materials.

It is difficult to select an overhead crane properly. Every crane is different, and none are built alike because no two buildings are alike. Because the industry has undergone massive consolidation in the last few years, it is important to choose a manufacturer that has experience in the market for purposes of safety and availability of crane accessories.
